About Las Vegas Prom Closet
Las Vegas Prom Closet began serving Southern Nevada in 2003, when a group of local women joined forces to provide opportunities for high school-aged children living in foster care to attend their proms. There were few resources available for these girls to purchase formal-dresses or accessories appropriate for prom. These children were already being excluded from many normal passages into adulthood, and the expense of a high school prom was an out-of-reach luxury.
Teaming up with Aly's Prom Closet in Reno, the group of Southern Nevada women quickly realized that there was a huge need in Las Vegas. Over the past seven years, Las Vegas Prom Closet has provided more than 1,000 dresses free of charge to girls who would have not otherwise been able to attend their prom activities. Working with local school counselors, child-related charities and the foster system, the aim of those volunteering with LV Prom Closet is to provide a dress to any girl that wants one and is not able to afford one. The LV Prom Closet provides a store-like setting with a wide variety of dress choices for the girls, organized on racks by size, dressing rooms and volunteers to help with style decisions when called upon.
The Las Vegas Prom Closet is staffed, organized and run by volunteers. All donations - goods, services and funds - go directly to the benefit of the students. Our business partners and supporters have helped by donating in a variety of ways: dry cleaning for the donated dresses, dining and entertainment certificates, storage space for off-season storage needs, store display racks, transportation of the goods and equipment, dresses and accessories, promotional information to the community and cash donations which help purchase all of the above.
This year, Las Vegas Prom Closet will open our store at UNLV's Cox Pavilion's Practice Gym on Saturday, March 27th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students interested in getting a dress simply need to bring valid Clark County school student identification to the Prom Closet. Members of UNLV's Women's Athletic teams will be assisting prom-goers in finding their dream dress.
How you can help
We always need more volunteers to assist in collecting dresses, setting up and running the store. Donations of contemporary gently used or new formal gowns and accessories are always needed. We need dresses in all sizes, colors and styles. Gowns should be in good condition, with no stains or other damage. Donations of store fixtures in good condition are also greatly appreciated.
We are currently collecting gowns and accessories at the following locations:
